Crazy to think I’m actually sitting in Grand Rapids right now.. in Evan and Taylor’s apartment.
Today marks two weeks since we flew into the U.S. and it already feels like we’ve been here for an eternity. We flew into LAX and spent a couple of nights in Venice. The first day we were there we walked down to Santa Monica pier, bought pre-rolled joints and I got my nose pierced (which by the way, was the most painful thing I’ve ever endured). It felt all sorts of weird and funny to be legally walking around with weed and I remember freezing up just after walking out of the store because a cop walked by, major lol.
Our second day in Venice we hung out in West Hollywood. We went to the Tar Pits and filming of the Late Late Show with James Cordon which was unreal (nb: episode starred Jillian Bell). We sat next to a really nice New Zealand girl who had just moved there after winning the DV lottery. That night we did a bit of bar hopping and Callum scored a Tinder date. Unlucky on the scene, I jumped in an Uber home and started talking to a guy named Alan. Got that vibe that was a little like… when you know, you know, which was scary. Spoke to him well into the night and we half agreed to hang out the next day but I got too scared and said we wouldn’t be able to make it because we were flying to San Francisco in the afternoon. I ended up leaving my pillow at the hostel (the same pillow I made a very big scene about taking with me) and he offered to go and get it if I promised to fly back and see him. Typical me, who would do literally anything for a boy, I half agreed. We spoke non-stop while we were in San Francisco and we even tried Facetiming a couple of times but couldn’t catch each other. Things have started to fizzle a bit now but I’ll lowkey be looking for an excuse to fly back to LA as soon as possible. I couldn’t stop thinking like, literally YOLO, what’s the worst that could happen? Then I’d think well what happens if I don’t like him, or he doesn’t like me? Then I thought well fuck… what if we both like each other, then what? I think I’m glad it’s fizzling because it’s a bit of a weight off my shoulders but at the same time, when you know, you know…
Anyway, I’m sure I’ll have more to say about that eventually but our long weekend in San Francisco with Janine and Andrew was incredible. We flew in on Thursday night and just had dinner and on Friday, Callum and I went into San Francisco city, had a quick peek at Westfield SF, went to the Cheesecake factory and Pier 36 to watch the sea lions (AKA my favourite place in the entire world). That night we hit the bars in Mission and got blackout off $20US. Unbearably hungover the next morning, the four of us headed to Santa Cruz to walk the boardwalk and ride the famous Giant Dipper rollercoaster which was a super fun day. That night we all got high, ate mac and cheese, watched a movie and listened to the Lizzo acoustic session. Sunday, Callum & I went to Muir Woods which was really beautiful but also a very long day. If we ever get the chance to go back we know that we have to prebook the shuttle in advance and spend a whole day up there. That night we just had dinner at home and went to bed. Monday we packed up, went downtown and walked around and went to the Salesforce park which was beautiful – such a hidden gem.
Finally. we were headed for Chicago en route to Grand Rapids. We’ve been here a week now and I still can’t wrap my head around it. I think I was expecting it to feel exciting and new but being here again has made me kind of realise that this is just my life now and these are my friends, even though they live halfway across the world. I keep saying that it’s weird because it doesn’t feel weird to be here but it’s been two years since we were last in town which is unbelievable to think. We haven’t visited campus yet so I think when we finally get there it will feel a bit more real. Catching up with all of our friends has been so lovely but has also felt so normal, like we never left. This weekend is Labor Day weekend and we’re heading home to Evan’s and then to Spencer’s for an authentic Rohatynski darty.
Actually, I almost forgot! I matched with someone on Tinder last night who studied abroad at Macquarie the same semester I was studying here at GVSU. He seems pretty cool and words full time in recruitment now. Trying to get him to come to Howell Boot Night but he’s bloody busy. More to come. Or at least we’ll see if there’s more to come, lol.
A short overview of what we’ve been up to in GR:
- Taylor’s birthday
- Lots of BDUBS
- Shooting with Wade & Tiff
- Whitecaps game with Aidan, Kinsey, Jacob & Lauren
